Does My Website Need an SSL Certificate?

Does My Website Need an SSL Certificate?

The average person, both tech, and non-tech savvy, probably haven't noticed the shift in websites becoming more secure. These days, every website on the internet needs to be secured with an SSL certificate. In fact, Google has recently made it non-optional. What is...

Domain Name and Hosting- What’s the Difference?

Domain Name and Hosting- What’s the Difference?

So you’re wanting to start a new website. You’ve heard you need to buy a domain name and hosting but aren’t quite sure what those even are, what the difference is and what is really necessary. Let me clear it up real quick: hosting and domain names are two completely separate things, and you need both to have a website. So, what is hosting? Hosting is basically the server where your website files are stored. The metaphor I like to use most is that building a website is like building a house. The land your house will sit on is like your hosting plan…

How to Choose a Hosting Plan

Whether you’re new to hosting or you’re a seasoned website maker, choosing the right hosting plan can be overwhelming. There are about a million hosting companies, shared hosting vs. managed hosting, etc. etc. It can be hard to know what you need and what you don’t. Let’s take a look at the major things you should look for, and some things you should avoid. But first, what even is hosting? It’s the server your website files live on. Website Launch: Lewes in Bloom

The new Lewes in Bloom website has finally launched!! I absolutely loved doing this website because of all the beautiful flower pictures! Lewes in Bloom is a non-profit organization promoting the beautification and preservation of historic Lewes, Delaware. They plant and maintain beautiful gardens throughout the city, as well as host events, provide tips and tricks for gardening, and teach children about gardens and plants with their Children’s Learning Garden. The website is built using a highly customized WordPress theme (Divi) and uses Woocommerce for the shop.

Website Launch: Lawyer Resources

Website Launch: Lawyer Resources

Introducing the new Lawyer Resources website! This one was so fun to create because it was a little technical and required some serious thought (I love a challenge!). The logo was created by my colleague and good friend Jacob Williamson, of Jacob Williamson Design. The color scheme and typography for the website were chosen by me based on example websites from the client. I wanted to make sure the website turned out exactly as he envisioned Lawyer Resources, so I included ideas from as many of his favorite websites as I could.

Website Launch: For Goodness Cake

Website Launch: For Goodness Cake

I’m so excited to launch the new For Goodness Cake website! This one has been a long time coming. Last year, I was desperate for portfolio work. I had already built two fictitious websites, and I knew I needed more. But coming up with fake businesses and content isn’t easy and it’s time-consuming, so I started looking around at people I knew who had a business but weren’t quite ready for a website. Fortunately for me, I have a friend who was just starting her cake decorating business at the time.

Must-Have Resources for Freelance Web Designers

**Updated 09/11/2017** How do you come across your favorite services and apps? If you’re like me, you use something crappy that doesn’t work until you’re completely fed up and you go searching for something better. The apps I used a year ago are 90% different than what I use today because it seems that something new is always coming out with better features and a cooler UI (let’s face it, a slick UI is half the reason I choose to use something). In hopes of saving someone at least a little time, I thought I’d come up with a list of the services, apps, and plugins I currently use.
